Tasha Back - DOP

Skinship, Murmurs

"Nichola approaches her projects in a very well thought out and prepared manner. I have worked with far more experienced directors who struggle to visualise and plan as well as she does. She is aware of all the departments and how they contribute to the final film and has her eye over all of those elements. I very much enjoy working with Nichola because she collaborates well and gives excellent feedback on every shot. She has opinions on every detail and clearly knows her approach to a script and keeps this in mind throughout the shoot. The scripts she has drafted herself are highly original and visual. I believe she has a real talent. She is also calm and always lovely to work with on-set."

Andreas Russo - Sound Designer/Composer

Murmurs

"Nichola is the rare example of a director who takes full advantage of all the storytelling tools that cinema provides: in her films every hand gesture, every sound, every piece of clothing is carefully chosen to impart the right emotion onto the audience. Working with her is a fulfilling, collaborative experience."

The Passing

"Nichola Wong and I got paired up during our time at the NFTS. I was assigned to mix the short film she directed "The Passing" in the Dolby Atmos Dubbing facility on campus. Upon the first watch of the film, I couldn't believe that it was a student film. 'The Passing' quickly became one of the most touching films I've ever worked on. Nichola handled every aspect of filmmaking with such precision and care. She was a pleasure to work with during the mix, to say the least. Her professionalism, critical thinking, and open-mind as a Director quickly led to solidifying our relationship during the mix. I would highly recommend Nichola to any production company with no hesitation."

Skinship, Murmurs

"I had a pleasure of working with Nichola Wong on two of her short films, Skinship and Murmurs. Both experiences were extremely enjoyable and allowed me to get to know Nichola’s working style and creative sensibilities. Firstly, she comes up with multitude of ideas for her scripts. Oftentimes, whilst reading her drafts hair would stand up on the back of my neck, her work has power to mesmerise, move and intrigue. As I am reading her scripts, I can see them unfolding in front of my inner eye and want to be involved immediately. I feel that this ability to communicate, engage and inspire from the get-go is a very valuable quality for a director. Secondly, Nichola puts enormous amount of time and energy into research and preparation. She carefully considers and makes decisions regarding casting, crewing up, locations, visual style, pace, use of music and other aspects of production. She conducts rehearsals and collaborates with the actors to help them flesh out characters. This thorough preparation allows her to communicate with crew effectively, be more flexible on the day and accommodate any last minute changes. When it comes to the post production, Nichola is very open to the process of working with the rushes rather than chasing the ideas that were formed at script stage. She has strength and maturity to look at the material with honesty. Our editing sessions were never about individual trims, but rather ‘is this truthful?’, ‘does this move you?’, ‘do we give audience enough?’, ‘do we give away too much?’ ‘are we being self-indulgent?’ ‘is the pace right?’. Nichola treats music as an element that can elevate film to yet another level but never as a crutch to help and manufacture emotion. She works with composers on creating an original soundtrack without relaying on temp. With every collaborator, Nichola is receptive to their ideas and cherishes their creative input."

The Passing

"Working with Nichola on “The Passing” is one of my fondest memories of my career so far. We were on the same wavelength immediately with the approach to the film and it was a joy being so comfortable and bouncing back ideas off each other, feeling empowered and not afraid to suggest even the wildest ideas. On set, Nichola is a very calm and decisive presence, knowing exactly what is needed. This enabled the crew to work very efficiently, with the objectives always clear and morale high. The results of which is a unique and beautiful film that I am extremely proud to have been a part of."

Saul Bragman - Composer

The Passing

"I had a fantastic experience working with Nichola. In my introduction to her work and style, her storytelling and aesthetic came through so clearly alongside her intentions for the music that the story needed. The creative conversations I had with her felt very natural and easy, with her direction throughout the score's journey always being clear. Every new iteration and discussion felt like a positive move forward. Furthermore, during the mix stage of the film (but also on a general basis), the process felt very comfortable and you sensed that she has a great deal of respect and trust in her team-mates."
